What is an Original Artist's Print?

An Original Artist's Print is an artwork printed by hand by an artist, using one or more of the following methods: Screen Printing, Lithography, Intaglio, Relief, and Monotype. The artwork is produced as a limited edition, with each print signed and numbered by the artist. Although there are many of the same image in an edition, each numbered print is an individual part of the whole. Therefore an original print is one piece of a multiple original work of art. An Original Artist's Print is not to be confused with a reproduction, or digital copy of an existing artwork, such as a Giclee Print.

What is Screen Printing?

Screen Printing is a printing technique used by artists and printmakers to produce Original Artist Prints. One colour is printed at a time, so several screens can be used to produce a multi-coloured image or design. ...The edition is usually printed in one go, one colour at a time. It is a time consuming process, involving coating screens, exposing screens, mixing ink, creating design The process involves using a Silkscreen, which is a metal frame with fine mesh stretched across it. Ink is transferred from one side of the screen, through the mesh and onto paper (or another surface) below, using a squeegee blade. Screen printing is a printing technique where a mesh is used to transfer ink onto a substrate, except in areas made impermeable to the ink by a blocking stencil. A blade or squeegee is moved across the screen to fill the open mesh apertures with ink, and a reverse stroke then causes the screen to touch the substrate momentarily along a line of contact. This causes the ink to wet the substrate and be pulled out of the mesh apertures as the screen springs back after the blade has passed.
